Entre CAPAS
Fall 2023
The fashion industry is always thinking about the “commercial”, being able to sell in large quantities and making the most amount of profit possible.
As a designer my work deconstructs this notion and uses the idea of “upcycling” in an innovative, interactive way. The collection revolves around the idea of bringing new life to pre-existing garments by either mending them or creating new techniques with them.
I was inspired by Panama’s indigenous Mola textiles that use reverse applique to make garments that are like a coloring book and allow the wearer to cut away layer of fabric in order to reveal the design in the garment, creating a collection based on emotional durability.
The collection invites the wearer to wear the clothes, and motivates them to use and keep them the way that clothing should be meant to be cared for and kept. The more signs of use in the garment add to it and build character rather than making it something that is “old/used” and is thrown away and replaced.
